When growing your blog, you cannot always get away with the free stuff. There comes a time when you will have to make blog investments to improve the quality of your blog. Some of these investments will also help improve your credibility with your readers and future brands you might get to work with. So, let’s get cracking:
Investments Worth Making for Your Blog:
Secure Your Domain Name
Securing a domain name for your blog is probably one of the cheapest and easiest investments you will make for your blog. Simply getting loosing the .wordpress.com or .blogspot.com for your blog name will improve your credibility with your readers and potential brands.
I purchased my domain name through GoDaddy. It was super fast and super easy to sign up! The service is great and they are very easy on the pocket.
Get a Hosting Plan
If you want freedom over the design of your blog, then a hosting plan is what you need! While you can get away with using a free hosting plan (like Blogger or WordPress), you would want to “own” your space on the web if you are serious about your blog or business. Free platforms can be extremely limiting when it comes to design and customization and there is always the super scary possibility that you can lose all of your content when the free platform closes down! Imagine that after one whole year of writing awesome content, building a brand and raking in the traffic and poof! it’s all gone because the free platform you used closed down? SHOCK! HORROR!
P.S. Don’t confuse WordPress Free hosting with WordPresss blogging software. I use the WordPress blogging software for Glamorous Glitter, but my blog is hosted with Afrihost.I have never had any problems with them and their services and hosting plans start for as cheap as R9! So, if you are looking for blog hosting plans in South Africa, definitely check them out.
Invest in an Image Editing Program
Here’s the truth, you DON’T need Photoshop to create beautiful images and graphics for your blog. Yes, it is a great tool and you can do almost anything on it, but, there are many other cheaper, and sometimes even FREE options available. Personally, I feel like the Picmonkey Royale Membership gives me great font option, lovely overlays and cool graphics I can use. It’s also really affordable ($33 per year), even for us South Africans, so totes consider upgrading!
Start from a Strong Foundation of Knowledge
Guys, even the most successful bloggers out there needs a pep-talk once in a while! For me, I find my pep-talks through awesome blogging ebooks. When I started to treat my blog as more than just a hobby, I invested in several ebooks (free and paid-for) and I’ve learnt so, so much in the process!
My favourite book, and possibly the best blogging investment I have ever made is the Building a Framework by Abby Lawson ebook. Yes, it’s $75 for the full package that includes the ebook, a blog binder, video tutorials and so much more. But, if you are just interested in the book, you can purchase it for $25 (you will receive the 209 page ebook, a blog binder and a course checklist). I definitely recommend this ebook and course, so if you have $25 lying around, you should definitely invest in this ebook! It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner blogger or have been blogging for years, this ebook is for you!
P.S. I wrote a FREE blogging ebook – Transform Your Blog in 7-Days that you can download.
P.P.S. I wrote another ebook, The Ultimate Guide to Marketing Your Blog.
The reason I didn’t mention having a fancy camera and a theme is because you don’t need one! Yes, the fancy camera will allow you to take better pictures, but there are phones out there with better cameras than most DSLR cameras and with great editing tools, you can totes take awesome blog pictures. You also don’t need a fancy theme with stunning curls and twirls. I’ve seen many a “successful” blogger with a standard FREE WordPress theme and they are rocking their blogs! If you have the money, you can invest in a pre-made theme, or even have someone design one for you, but rest assured, if your content is super awesome and your blog is easy on the eyes and easy to navigate, a fancy theme won’t help you much.
